Day 13: Stonewalled

One more time on the longeline.

Getting ready to work

Making it through the little gate!

I think this is the last time we’ll put Smokey on the longeline in the arena. We’re not making much progress on the line. I think it’s a combination of confusion of the halter pulling on him and reluctance to yield to my asks. We also swapped the rope halter for the flat nylon halter to try that out. He was throwing his head around a lot and Jenn thought that might help if he was being annoyed by the rope halter. It seemed to calm him down a little, so maybe the rope is a bit tough on him. I’ll keep that in mind when thinking about putting him in a bosal in the future. Sounds like it might be more hassle than it’s worth.

Behaving on the longeling!

Tomorrow we’ll bring some round pen panels down to the arena and get him moving some in a free longe situation. I think he will be easier to move around and much more likely to be happier and more willing to work for me that way. I expect there will be some moments where I question if it’s the right thing, but I think in the long run, this is the next step since we are at an impasse with the on-line longeing. Hopefully Smokey can keep his head and not freak out too much in the pen.

What we do besides longeing in the arena

Jenn came by and took a million awesome pictures for me tonight and got some real gems. Smokey was a champ and didn’t mind the flash too much and my little ham-dogs let Jenn take some portraits of them after we got done bothering Smokey.

About smokeythemustang

I'm just a girl who loves horses, who's asking horses to love her back. Right now I'm training a wild mustang. Or he's training me. You decide.

Try some “sacking out” before lunging him. Try using just lead rope. Just a suggestion.

    • I’ve been working some on that. I was hoping he’d be a little more receptive to the traiing flag than he is, but we’re getting closer to letting me touch him with it without bolting, so it’s progress. he’s fine with just about anything else touching him thus far. Thanks for the suggestion!
