Quick Catch Up

Just a couple quick videos and a bit of commentary today.

Here are two very short videos of Smokey in my new old saddle that I got off eBay. I was really surprised how well it turned out after cleaning it and it turns out it’s pretty comfy and not too small for my big old butt. All in all, pretty satisfied.

That being said, not only did Smokey wear this saddle for the first time this past weekend, but I also sat on him in the saddle! He didn’t seem to mind too much, but I didn’t want to test the water with it too much either, so we just walked a couple steps and called it a day. He was pretty sweaty after working in the sun with it on and I didn’t want to get on him bareback after that anyhow. Such a good boy!

On Sunday, I worked him for a while on the longeline and then got on him a few times. He seems to know that he can dump me off at any point (or maybe I’m reading into it too much) so I’m hesitant to really walk him around like I had been doing. We’re staying in the small arena for the time being and may put the round pen back up to keep safety on my side again. He was pretty good, though unfocused while I was on his back. He even pivoted to the left a little bit for me while I was on him, which was pretty dang awesome!

I spent some time saying goodbye through the fence on Sunday. Smokes didn’t seem to keen on letting me go right away, which was pretty adorable. He didn’t actually walk away from the gate until I made it about halfway up the hill of the adjacent pasture. I think he kinda likes me!

Don’t go, mom!

I’m looking forward to ending this busy week at the barn on Friday. I haven’t been up to see him due to a busy schedule all week and am hoping we can get the crazy out on Friday so that we can get some work done this weekend.

On a training unrelated note, I’m looking at buying him a blanket for the winter mostly to keep the rain off him when it starts raining and gets really cold. I don’t think he needs much, but I’d prefer to have it in case I feel he does at some point this winter. Better safe than sorry. If (God forbid) it snows like it did a few years ago, it might be nice for him to have something to keep the water off of him more than keep the warmth in.  He seems to do fine insulating himself with his fur for warmth, I’m just not sure how he’ll fare in the wet, as well.

I’m eyeing this blanket for him. It’s the Big D Magnum turnout sheet. He’s not exactly wide, but it sounds like it’s more of a quarterhorse fit than some of the other brands and I want to make sure it doesn’t rub on him if it doesn’t have to.

I also bought part of his Halloween costume, which I am more than excited about! I’m sure there will be tons of pictures to share come next week. We actually have some work to do to make sure he won’t be spooked by it, if that gives you any hints 😉
